CALUMET REVISITED: A monthly forum on the Calumet Region's past, present, and future
- FROM MICHAEL BOOS, EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR OF THE ASSOCIATION FOR THE WOLF LAKE INITIATIVE (AWLI)
Jointly sponsored by the Association for the Wolf Lake Initiative (AWLI) and CCSJ, the forum’s fifth year begins with the September session. Participants in the upcoming sessions will learn about local bird habitat restoration efforts, the history of the environmental organization Save the Dunes, resources for exploring the region’s history and the effort to make finding these resources easier.
The forum seeks to shed light on the Calumet Region’s rich human history and environmental treasures. It will be held the first Tuesday evening of every month from September through May 2019. Exceptions are the October and January forums.
Following is a list of speakers scheduled and their topics of discussion.
Tuesday, Sept. 4, Kris Krouse, executive director of Shirley Heinze Land Trust, on the history of the organization.
Tuesday, Oct. 9, Walter Skiba, CCSJ associate professor of arts and humanities, on the history of the college.
Tuesday, Nov. 6, Nat Miller, director of conservation for Audubon Great Lakes, on the organization’s efforts in this Region.
Tuesday, Dec. 4, regional heritage custodians Pat Wisniewski, Kevin Murphy, Dr. Michael Longan & Dr. Larry McClellan, leading a panel on a proposed Calumet Regional Heritage Museum.
Tuesday, Jan. 8, Natalie Johnson, executive director of Save the Dunes, on the organization’s history and current work.
Tuesday, Feb. 5, Dr. Larry McClellan & Jeannie Regan Dinius on Filling the Underground Gap, the effort to document Underground Railroad activities between Chicago and Michigan City.
Tuesday, March 5, Cedar Lake Historical Association to present the history of Cedar Lake.
Tuesday, April 2, Steve McShane, archivist and curator at Calumet Regional Archives, on the archives.
Tuesday, May 7, Paul Labovitz, superintendent of Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore, on efforts to obtain National Park Status for the National Lakeshore.
AWLI, established in 1999, is a bi-state, not-for-profit organization and land trust with a mission of protecting and enhancing the Wolf Lake watershed.
Calumet College of St. Joseph has been a part of Northwest Indiana since 1951 and lies within the Wolf Lake watershed.
Calumet Revisited began in 2014.
Monthly discussions, led by guest speakers, shed light on the region's rich human history and environmental treasures. Practical suggestions for meeting the needs of region residents while honoring and preserving the natural beauty around us will be shared by participants, also. Discussions are held on the Campus of Calumet College of St. Joseph (CCSJ) in Whiting, Indiana.
